India's IT capital, Bangalore will be renamed Bangaluru some time this year.
I think its a waste of time and money. The idea was mooted by previous chief minister of Karnataka, Dharam Singh. It seems he ran out of ideas to promote Bangalore and his own government. Several popular daily newspapers fell-in-line praising the name change of Bangalore to promote their local newspaper editions. But IT industry leaders kept mum, trying to side-step the issue instead of attracting more negative attention from semi-intelligent politicians of India.
Using a failed politicians best weapon to put his name in history books and perhaps get votes from macho locals -- Dharam Singh proposed to throw away the name given by Britishers and use a "local" name. Who will gain? And more importantly who will pay for this administrative change?
The tax payers money will again be wasted by self-centered, egomaniacal, and corrupt politicans of India. Bangalore badly needs to spend money on roads and infrastructure improvement. But no, that will not buy votes during elections. The real vote bank is in villages where election-time freebies and promises, few improvement and macho emotions might surely give a demented politician his only chance of survival.
