Covering a recent interview with Oracle Corp's CEO Larry Ellison, Financial Times stated:
As part of a recent study of the open source software market, Mr Ellison said that Oracle had considered buying Novell, which after Red Hat is the biggest distributor of Linux.
Novell had acquired SuSE Linux in 2003 to attempt another hit at Microsoft (MSFT).
Other drivers besides stack completion that are behind Oracle Corp’s interest in Novell (NOVL) as cited by experts/users/analysts are:
- Complementary Novell products (like Secure Login and Identity Management software)
- Increased Competition with Microsoft on Database front
- Improvements in Database Performance by tightly coupling with OS (Linux)
Even if Oracle Corp. does not go ahead with acquiring Novell, the drivers would still remain true for the company.
