DotMobi (.mobi) — Web Sites & Services for Mobile Devices

 Mobile Web is on the horizon. In future if you want to surf web from your mobile device your urls will end in .mobi! Yahoo Inc. (YHOO), Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT) have been among the early registrars on the .mobi domain names provided by mTLD.

Mobi.png mTLD is the company that has the right to assign .mobi domain names.  mTLD intends to provide guidelines for ensuring that websites are tweaked right for mobile viewing. According to Wireless week

The mTLD effort has two functions: letting consumers know about Websites specifically designed for mobile phones, and establishing the ground rules and style guides used to design these sites.

Network Publishing — create content once and repurpose for multiple media/devices –has long been the vision of Adobe Systems (ADBE). After the acquisition of Macromedia, Adobe Systems with products like Flash Lite, GoLive, and Dreamwear would be expected to be at the forefront of software providers who provide tools for building .mobi mobile websites. Microsoft would be another expected major player in this software tools category.

According to a document from mTLD its investors are: Ericsson, GSM Association, Google, Hutchison, Microsoft, Nokia, Orascom Telecom, Samsung Electronics, Syniverse, Telefónica Móviles, TIM, T-Mobile and Vodafone.

mTLD will publish best-practices guides for developers of .mobi sites. Here is one such document created by mTLD.
