
Several Bloggers have published posts to help explain the benefits to individuals and approaches toward Blogs and Blogging. A popular one is Darren Rowse's Pro Blogger. This post attempts to analyze the approaches to Blogosphere of two major players on the Web -- Yahoo Inc. and Google.
Google (GOOG) and Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) have very different approaches to Blogging, Blog Search & the Blogosphere. Google has a predominant Social Search approach to Blogs while Yahoo has a predominant Media approach.
For the sake of clarity -- there are 3 base models that can be built around Blogs:
- Pure Media
- Pure Social Search
- Hybrid
For the sake of further references (and at the risk of sounding clichéd ) I have invented some acronyms for these models.
A pure media model will focus on monetizing Blog Content through text and banner advertisements (including various affiliate models like Amazon’s and eBay’s). I call it PMM.
A pure social search model will focus on building a Blogging platform that’s easy to publish to, Blog content that’s indexed and search enabled, and Blog content that does not sit inside a walled garden. I call it PSS.
A hybrid model will build monetization via text or banner advertisements around a core Social Search model for Blogs. I call it S2M. A hybrid model could also reverse the previous approach : build Social Search around a core Media Model. I call it M2S.
