This is my second post on Product Management.
During my career I have not yet met a Product Manager who started his/her career as a “Product Manager”. The reason is that Product Management requires skills and competencies that get developed over several years of work experience. The common skills & competencies that I have noticed in successful product managers are:
- Domain Knowledge
- Customer Focus
- Communication Skills (ability to communicate effectively with a diverse set of stake holders – top management, engineering ,quality, sales, marketing, customers)
- Strategic Thinking and a good understanding of the Marketing Framework
- Competitive Awareness
- Quantitative & Business Analysis
- Attention to Detail
- Primary and Secondary research skills
- Prioritization and Multitasking capabilities
- Leadership & People Management skills
