
In my last post Qualities of a Product Manager I had listed Domain Experience as a skill required by a Product Manager. However, I consider domain experience to be a sufficient but not necessary skill.
That means even if someone does not have domain experience but has a well developed skill set out the list I mentioned in my previous post, its fine. This Product Manager should however plan to learn fast about the specific domain because understanding competitor strenghts and consumer pain points is much easier when you understand their domain.
Senior Product Managers or Director/VP level Product Management professionals often have a "good-enough" idea of the domain of their product(s) and primarily focus on strategy, partnerships and business planning.
Normally, domain experts start with being Technical Product Managers while they gain a better understanding of the business and strategic facets of their company and the broader Product Management framework.
Also, it is important to note that depending upon the Product Managers previous experience he or she would be better in some skills than other - from the list in my previous post. Overall, most good product managers demonstrate development in most of the skill areas I mentioned.
